Catman…

So in the original captain Canuck series.. there was a breif apperance of this character named Catman.. he had this amulet that made him slightly stronger and gave him his purple costume.. then in the Reborn series his costume was reused and he was renamed Splatter…  I asked my father about this and he said it was simply because Catman was so used and so generic that he didnt want to deal with any possible fights to it….

now in the series i am attempting to get done… and drafts are being written… well we want to use Catman again in our own way… but to call him Catman and try to do the fights or change the name and just keep a tribute to the original character… that was a tough one…  i can tell you the slight redesign of his costume came easily.. and as i have shown it to others they think it looks great.. you can see a pic it is a few years old on my devaintart page… thegakrules.deviantart.com and it is an ok one… i find some of my peices are harder to look at after a while becasue at least i hope anyways i get better… and i dont like the older ones and many times wish i could re-do them… but isnt that the same with almost everything in life…

anyway.. thanks for popping by and taking a read

Steel Chamelion…

So.. i dont have much for you today… Steel Chamelion is an old character of my fathers.. and one we are trying to use… and the character we have come up with i think is very interesting and uique and will be fun to learn about…

it is an iteresting thing this crative stuff starting with some one elses characters and universe… i wonder how much we will make our own and still be repecable of the source material.. i guess time will tell..

thanks for reading…

Mr Gold…

So Mr gold he was a key bad guy in the original series.. and then tehre was a series that in the cc world we call west coast canuck and they featured gold there as well…

well we also want to do a mr gold for our canuck.. but we didnt want our gold to be teh same.. we wanted to use him not only to push the story forward, but to bring expectaions of what a bad guy should be and what he may do in the future.. but we wanted to make him our own… i think this is one of the most interesting things we are trying to do with many characters.. but key ones like Gold are tricky.. i mean how to pay Homage and at the same time make him ours and unique…

when we finnaly get our stuff done i guess it will be up to readers to tell us how we have done…

thanks for reading…

The art influence of the Original Captain Canuck on the Comic industry…

So as a promised yesterday… and really look 3 blogs this year.. it is crazy!

So really what has been on my mind and me and my canuck-partner were talking about this is, and he said to me, ‘dude, i dont think your dad realizes it but he is like the Jack Kirby of Canadian Comics’… and i have been thinking aobut this since then.

Now let me expalin where i think there is some validity here … back in 1975 when my dad started capatian cancuk they were new at this whole comic thing so they needed to deveolp the methods they were going to use to make thier vision come to life.  they did a few things that at teh time was differant… in the first issues in 1975 he used photos in teh back ground of a few of his panels…

though i think the biggest thing he did was the colouring… they were able to get bolder and better colours then almost any one else at the time… how was this done, well my dad siad after talking to an animator how they decided to colour the comic was to put a plastic sheet over the finished pages and paint them with animator paints…

this brought amazing colours to the books… i was looking over my anthology and talking to my God-Son who is trying to learn  to colour on the computer and i as i was looking at the art i just said.. you want to try to get colours like this for what y9ou are doing…

now speaking of the colours it is importnat to note that not only was george freeman an excellent penciler-inker (and we will get into this more in a min) but he was and i guess since he is still out there is a great colourist… to the point where in teh 80’s and 90’s he was running a company call digital chamelion.. these guys were the first to use computers to colour.. back when i was a teen and collecting these books the term being used was colour separations.. and everybody used them, DC, Marvel Dark Horse everyone! So the man has an eye for colour!!

Now as for the Drawing style… you will argue that maybe they didnt have as big affect on comics style as people like say Todd Mcfarlane and Jim Lee.  but i will argue that they had more influence…let me explain.

First my father has a very classic style that seems to be bold but free of alot of flash and pomp.  Now the Classic George stye was a very bold stylized square jawed super hero…and with George there and my father being more interested in the writing and story telling aspects of the comic left the main art duties to george and eventually Claude St Abuin (who is an amazing artist himself).

Now how did these people influence.. and really go back and look at georges art after reading this.  back in the late 70’s there was this teenager who loved comics, and since ther was only one comic studio in calgary he would go by there as often as he could wanting to be aroundpeople in the business and of course looking to see where he could get him self an in.  Now of course he was a Captain Canuck fan, and i belive still is.. but he is not a person i get to talk to often (well i have only talked to him once so how often is that! lol)

Now of course having a very small studio was not able to just hire anyone and small studios cant always afford things like assitants and such.  From though my understand was always welcome to visit and watch…

Well after Todd Mcfarlane went to the States on a baseball scholership he still continued his love of comics and continued to find work in the industry until i do believe it was DC who hired him first and afte sussecssfull runs on things like Batman went over to Marvel where he worked on may projects including his iconic run on Spiderman before him and some friends when over and started Image and he started Spawn, wich i have seen art from a 17 year old todd that he gave to my father.. interesting how the basic designs have stayed… but if you cant see some george influence in Todd well.. you need to look again…

so i would say with just that.. and this is all off the top of my head… i really should consider writing out my posts before i put them here.. but i just go with what i am thinking about and sadly you get punished with my mediocre writing…

well i hope you enjoyed this.. i am going to try to put up another post tommorow.. i am not sure what.. but  i will hop on to say hi..

thanks for reading

canuck updates all around…

So i figured since i was updateing this regularly.. and 2x this year is a regular thing for me!! lol….

First i wanted to talk about the movie with Minds Eye entertainment and what i know about that… first i do understand they are working with Richard on teh story and script development.  They are working within the Canadian film industry to get talent and funds assigned to the project.  BUt all that i ahve heard is there there is every intention of making this movie…and i hope so becasue if i ever get my canuck done then i want to time the release with the movie some how.. but that is still a ways away… though anymore info i get on the movie i will pass along…

Second the Original canuck… from what i understand my father has every intention of finishing the series he started, multiple other projects and such are keeping himi busy… but again the more i see of that the more i will let you know… though i can tell you right now he is working  on a Canuck colouring book i know this becasue he handed me a few weeks ago about 20 pages to finish and ink for him to add to the book… then i understand there will be an activity book follow up in the near future…

Now onto my seemingly never ending CSIS Agent Canuck project… as i said in my last post i do have a partner to help move it along.. a great creative partner adn one who will handle alot of the writing where i will help with more of the plotting and such… i am also going to see if i can get him some inking chops so when we come to the art it is not just me…

as for teh story it self all i can tell you is that we want to do our best to make this the best Canuck story so far… so we are setting the bar really really high for ourselves .. as we finalize some character designs i will put some art on here for you to see… so far we are pretty happy with a few of our character designs.. so maybe before the end of the month i may have something…

be patient with us though… as for my self right now while working on this project i am also working a full time job, a part time job and doing commision art on the side… so we will get there we just need a bit of extra time to get the best we can for you…

if there is anybody beyond myself and the voices in my head reading this then any questions you leave to me i will do my best to find out for you…

thanks for reading and stopping by… if i remember with my old brain the next post i would like to talk about the great art work in teh original series and my opinion of its impact on teh comic industry as a whole!
